Procedural Butterfly Wing Patterns
We present a simple model for synthesis of butterfly wing patterns. The model simulates the formation of eyespots as are called the rounded circular arrangements which appear in many butterfly species. We illustrate our results with the examples of Diatheria clymena and Automeris io species.
متن کاملElements of butterfly wing patterns.
The color patterns on the wings of butterflies are unique among animal color patterns in that the elements that make up the overall pattern are individuated. Unlike the spots and stripes of vertebrate color patterns, the elements of butterfly wing patterns have identities that can be traced from species to species, and typically across genera and families. Because of this identity it is possibl...
متن کاملModelling butterfly wing eyespot patterns.
Eyespots are concentric motifs with contrasting colours on butterfly wings. Eyespots have intra- and interspecific visual signalling functions with adaptive and selective roles. We propose a reaction-diffusion model that accounts for eyespot development. The model considers two diffusive morphogens and three non-diffusive pigment precursors. The first morphogen is produced in the focus and dete...
متن کاملImaging scatterometry of butterfly wing scales.
We describe an imaging scatterometer allowing hemispherical reflectance measurements as a function of the angle of incidence. The heart of the scatterometer is an ellipsoidal reflector, which compresses the hemispherical reflection into a cone-shaped beam that can be imaged by a normal optical system. The instrument's performance is illustrated by measurements of the scattering profiles of the ...
متن کاملThe butterfly Papilio xuthus detects visual motion using chromatic contrast.
Many insects' motion vision is achromatic and thus dependent on brightness rather than on colour contrast. We investigate whether this is true of the butterfly Papilio xuthus, an animal noted for its complex retinal organization, by measuring head movements of restrained animals in response to moving two-colour patterns. Responses were never eliminated across a range of relative colour intensit...
